Reflecting...

Friday 13th January, Norwich

The view from my clinic room window on Friday morning...

We are really not very good at winter weather are we?! Norfolk is not known for a lot of the wet stuff (apart form the odd threat of lowland flooding of course!) but this bit of snowfall on Friday put lots of people into a blind spin. To the amusement of the lovely Polish girl in the back office who kept exclaiming 'Seriously! This is not snow!'. I guess if you are used to Polish winters it must seem funny that a dusting can cause so much consternation.

Saturday 14th January, River Yare & Whitlingham, Norwich

The next morning was a complete contrast. It doesn't feel as though we have had many of those bright crisp winters days, and I thought it wasn't going to last, but after a quick burst of sleet late morning the sun came out again and I felt a sudden urge to escape the house with the camera.

The pull of water and reflections is always strong for me and I am lucky enough to be a short distance from the river that runs through the city. I obviously didn't get the exposure right on this because I managed to bleach out the top of the photo, but it was the reflections of the branches that had my attention. I love the slight distortion in the ripples.

This stretch of riverside has seen a huge amount of development over recent years, with new buildings springing up next to what were once dilapidated old factories and warehouses. There is still a fair bit of building going on and, generally speaking, I think it has been done sympathetically and has turned what was a pretty dubious bit of the city into a much more pleasant area. Whether any of the homes in these 'regeneration' schemes are remotely affordable is another matter - I feel for those the age of my sons who are struggling to find a way into independent living, either rented or otherwise, and conscious of the fact that Norwich is still really not the most expensive place to live.

A little further on, more reflections...

...and a few early snowdrops on the riverbank...

...before coming out behind the cathedral with its distinctive spire against the blue sky...

The path continues along the river and I decided to keep walking as it was so beautiful, the sun already dropping in the sky and casting long rays through the trees...

On the way out of the city I love these buildings with their pretty windows and ornate brickwork, albeit in varying states of disrepair now...

Whitlingham Country Park, an outdoor activity park built on the site of an old gravel quarry provides a place for walking, cycling, water sports or just enjoying the woodlands and nature. A visitors centre provides a cake and coffee stop if needed too. I just opted to walk, squelching a bit here and there but enjoying the chance to stretch my legs and appreciate the surroundings. Believe it or not, these are fields - the recent high tides and snow making them look like an extension to the broads...

Looking through these twisted branches to where there is usually a path across the grass, frequented by dog walkers. Some of this was frozen and I did see one or two hardy 4 legged types skittering across the ice.

A dyke runs more or less parallel to the great broad, utilised by the rowing club who were out practicing (didn't envy them actually, the water must have been icy)...

They whizzed through my photo leaving a trail of ripples in their wake...

Sunlight through the grasses at this time of year gives a particular kind of glow to everything...

...and as it dipped lower...

...from the other side of the broad the contrast between the golden vegetation and the grey of the water was striking...

By the time I got home again I had been walking for best part of 3 hours and covered almost 9 miles, a bit chilled but counting one or two blessings and reminding myself I must keep this up!

what a difference a day makes...

The weather doesn't seem to be able to make its mind up at the moment. We have had some lovely warm, sunny summery days and some dull grey days when the temperature plummets again and the wind goes straight through you.

Last weekend was spent working mostly - Saturday officially and Sunday just trying to catch up with paperwork so by mid afternoon I was going a bit stir crazy and needed to get out regardless of the elements.  We nipped across to Whitlingham Broad for a walk and in spite of the grey clouds it was good to get some fresh air.

I love that in the Spring, even on a pretty cold and grey day, the new leaves provide a splash of vivid fresh green...

It really feels as though everything has woken up and gone mad growing in the last couple of weeks - love these bottlebrush-like flowers (not sure what the tree is!)...

But it was cold! And within a couple of minutes I couldn't take any more photos because my fingers were so numb!

The following day was as if someone had just pushed the clouds away, with warm sunshine making coffee in the courtyard an imperative!

A bit rashly, perhaps, I even decided to put out the geranium cuttings I have been overwintering indoors (they are looking a little less well after a few cold evenings this week!). Couldn't resist a trip out for a quick walk. I didn't really have time to get up to the coast so I went as far as the broads, this is the River Bure at Woodbastwick, looking lovely in blue skies. There were a few early holiday boats with people thanking their luck as they sipped wine on their boat decks!

I love the sun through the golden grasses & reed beds...

Norfolk is a place of windmills, used to pump water off the marshes - this one was turning slowly in the gentle breeze...

The Bure marshes walk takes you across boardwalks through the wetlands - an easy walk but so quiet and peaceful...

There is such a lot of moisture here that moss grows freely and trees shoot upwards again when the fall over - which of course they do, because their roots are not so secure. I think it looks a bit as though fairies could live here... :)

I wonder if anyone ever uses this boat...

At the end of the boardwalk, there is a bird hide which looks out onto the broad - so peaceful...

It was such a beautiful afternoon I couldn't bring myself to head home so picked Tom up from work and went on up to the coast for chips on the seafront. By the time we got there it was nearly dark and definitely cold but huddled on a bench in our coats listening to the waves and looking out at the sunset, what's not to love?

What is this weekend going to offer, I wonder?

Spring sunshine...

With the temperature briefly hitting a heady 16C yesterday, it was possible to really begin to feel Springlike. Even with a hefty dose of flu I decided it would do me good to take a slow meander up to the river in the late afternoon sunshine.

My walk takes me through the cathedral grounds then along the back of the school playing field behind it.

The verges seem to have suddenly come alive with purples, yellows & whites of crocuses...

This is Cow Tower, glowing golden in the afternoon sunshine; this is part of the remains of the Norwich medieval defence structure and would have been used to house gunners and arrowmen defending the approach to the city across the River Wensum.

Built in the late C14th, this tower is a ruin but I love that some of the detail of the window& arrow ports remain...

This stretch of the riverside walk is covered with daffodils; in a week or two it is going to be glorious...

For now just the odd flower is bringing a welcome splash of colour...

The birds seem to have cottoned on to the Spring feeling too. A pair of blackbirds have been flirting like crazy by my door (last year they nested in the holly tree in the courtyard - hoping for the same again this year!) and down by the river a pair of ducks were dancing round each other on the water...

Back through the cathedral grounds the light was lovely through the trees...

and the cathedral looked beautiful against the blue sky...

More crocuses and a few early daffodils in the sheltered courtyard of Tombland...

and even some beginnings of pink blossom cheering my soul...

It really feels like winter is receding, hurrah for sunshine and colour, I love this time of year when everything is getting going again.

monday blues...

Don't really know why but my slightly jaded feeling persisted today.

In spite of...

...unexpected card from R. I thought we'd agreed not to do anniversary cards in the light of the post-Christmas economy drive (and we've never been great at cards anyway) - now feel suitably guilty that I didn't reciprocate. It all just feels a bit like papering over the cracks...

But I love the bright flowers on this card.

I had a short day at work today so, on a whim as the sun was shining, decided to head to the village I grew up in and where we were married 24 years ago today.

Never a good idea. Not sure what I was hoping for... to resurrect a few feelings maybe? An indulgent trip down memory lane? But so much has changed - the village looks tired and overcrowded with extra houses built in every possible space between their neighbours. The houses I always thought of as the big 'posh' houses look a bit tatty round the edges. Even the church seemed a bit run down and unloved...

In fairness, presumably whatever is happening to the porch is intended to make it look better but today I couldn't find any happy feelings here. In fact, I just felt nothing

It was a nice bright day, so I did take a walk through the village (probably not a great idea - wretched leg sore again now) - but I don't know if it was me and my memory playing tricks, or just because the place looks so different, I really struggled to find the footpaths I used to walk on. I'm sure it used to be possible to walk alongside the railway but there seem to be houses there too.

Don't think I shall go back there.

In an effort to find the small things that brighten life I went to the river, I have always loved the sunlight on the water.

And this did look lovely with the winter sun low in the sky.

Consider this day over, I think. Gawd help us, Silver wedding next.
